Broward League of Cities "My Monthly View"

“ I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.”

That is an oath that U.S. representatives and senators take as they’re being sworn in; however, I believe that many of them recite it with dishonesty.

On September 22, U.S. Senator Robert Corker said they “haven’t passed a budget in more than three years and not a single appropriations bill has been brought to the floor this year,” and that statement was claimed to be true by PolitiFact. By law, governmental bodies are required to pass a budget, with the federal fiscal year beginning October 1.

The Congressional Budget Act of 1974 requires Congress to pass budget resolutions in spring and we’re currently in fall. Congress members are ignoring that law and saying that their obligation is to ensure that the members on the other side of the aisle are not reelected.

Almost, if not every, municipality in Broward County, and even the state, has passed its budget. All of the budgets may not have surpluses; some may have deficits, but there’s a budget. Congress, however, is on a six-week break that started September 22. What type of leaders take a break in a bad economic session and say that it’s their responsibility to remove politicians that we, the American people, elected?

Federal lawmakers stated in their oath that they will “well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office.” Where is the loyalty and the dignity? The House passed seven of 12 annual appropriations bills and the Senate Appropriations Committee passed 11 of 12 spending bills. Out of the 24 bills, not one has been brought to the senate floor. I don’t believe in voting based on party affiliation. I believe in a nation where full-time workers work full time; the elected serve; political candidates care about all Americans; people vote in the best interest of America and not for a man who tell students to go to their parents to request money; and where as the day goes by, the nation progresses.

I don’t care what district or state you come from, your political affiliation, position, or who proposes the bill; I care about the route of this great nation. I have a message for our Congress: if you can’t and won’t lead, step aside and let others serve. We need to register to vote, cast our votes and encourage others to do the same. We must make sure that elected officials will serve and get this nation back on track.
